This is my third and final post about my latest trip to New York. As you all know, last year I took a trip to New Orleans, LA, and I took some time to volunteer while I was there. So, I’ve decided to keep this tradition going, and did the same thing while in NYC.
I really love the idea of doing good, even while on vacation. So, I signed up to volunteer with an organization called New York Cares. New York Cares is like the concierge of all non-profit organizations in the area. All you have to do is enter the days and times you would like to volunteer, and what your interests are, and voila! Just like that, you’re linked up with all the organizations in the area that match your interests and have availability on the days you prefer to volunteer.
New York Cares had so many options for volunteering in New York, I had a hard time picking just one. So, I chose two! My first volunteer opportunity was in a food pantry in the Bronx. For a few hours, about a dozen other volunteers and I sorted, packed, and dispensed a variety of groceries to the pantry’s patrons. I know it sounds like a tedious task, but I actually enjoyed it! There’s something about doing a selfless act that is truly rewarding. Well, at least for me…
My second volunteer opportunity was at a nursing home in Manhattan. We transported (by wheelchair) the residents of the nursing home down to the chapel in order to attend church service, and they were so appreciative! All I did was assist them in and out of the chapel. That’s it! But, the smiles on their faces let me know that our “simple” act of kindness brought them much joy. It made me happy to make them happy. See how that works??? 😊
Both activities allowed me to give back to the community I was visiting. I know most people don’t consider volunteering while on vacation fun or exciting, but being able to help someone when they need it the most, makes me very happy. Look, I’m just trying to make the world a better place, one good deed at a time.
Well, I’m sure my pursuit of happiness will lead me to another volunteer vacation next year. And, I can’t wait to see where my heart takes me! I’ll be sure to tell you my plans as soon as I figure it out. Until then, be blessed and happy travels!
